Archival image storage - how to store your flower images

Taking great flower pictures is an art and like all arts it needs an element of practical organization to back it up. In fact backing up photos is one of those incredibly important tasks that is very often forgotten or neglected by many photographers. The reason is that it is dull, not nearly so absorbing as composing a beautiful picture of a flower or landscape. But, by the very nature of computers, all those carefully thought out and skillfully photographed pictures can be lost in the twinkling of a hard drive.

For long term storage of digital photos you have several options and it would be a good idea to choose at least one, preferably two, of them and implement them routinely to give you security that your photos will be safely stored for posterity.

Online back-up for digital photographs
Look at the options available online. There are several reliable and good quality online back-up services that will store your photographs securely. The advantage of this option is that you are not filling up your own hard drive with large images and you can access them from wherever you are in the world, without having to load yourself down with bulky storage systems.

Look for services that can store large sized files – you don’t want to have to compress your photo files as this can compromise the quality.

Sugarsync.com have an i-phone app which makes it one of the most versatile online companies offering this service. External hard drive dedicated to your digital photo files An external hard drive is a very convenient and affordable solution to storing your digital photographs. The external hard drives available today have huge amounts of space that can easily cope with large images. Get into the habit of backing up all your photos onto the external hard drive. It can then be unplugged and stored away from the computer, perhaps in a metal filing cabinet for security, and will be completely unaffected if your computer crashes or is attacked by a virus. Archival DVDs and CDs Backing up your best images onto CDs is always good practice, but you have to make sure that you are using archival quality CDs in the first place and storing them correctly in the second. Cheap CDs can deteriorate rapidly, especially when kept in their plastic boxes, which give off corrosive vapors over time. Buy CDs that are guaranteed to be of archival quality and store them in acid-free, non-corrosive plastic sleeves for longevity. Using one or more of these back-up and storage methods will ensure that those beautiful flower pictures that you took so much trouble to capture, will be there for you to enjoy for as long as live.
